Mobile phone celebrates 40th anniversary

Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola, called a rival colleague at another telecoms company and announced he was speaking from “a ‘real’ cellular telephone”.
In 2012 a report carried out by the International Telecommunication Union found that there were six billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide.
At the time the global population was seven billion.

和訳

携帯電話、誕生から40周年を迎える。

史上初の携帯電話通信は米モトローラのモバイル通信技術開発チームを率いていた技術者、マーティン・クーパー（Martin Cooper）氏によるものだった。クーパー氏はライバル会社の技術者に「本物の携帯電話からかけている」と言ったそうです。

国際電気通信連合が2012年に行ったレポートによると、全世界の携帯電話契約数は60億件あることが判明。発表時の総人口は70億人でした。

和訳のポイント

1. senior（シニア）

「senior」はお年寄り、先輩、年配、管理職など、様々な意味があるます。フレーズを紹介します。

– 「he’s volunteering at the senior centre」-> 彼は老人ホームでボランティアをしています。
– 「she’s in her senior year」-> 彼女は高校3年生です。
– 「you should respect your seniors」-> 年配・年上の人を敬うことは大切です。
2. colleague（コリーグ）

「colleague」とは会社の会社の同僚・同級生のことです。「we went to the same school」の代わりに「we were colleagues」と言ってみましょう。「we were colleagues at 会社名・学校名」とも言います。

3. carried out（キャリード アウト）

「carry out」は運び出すという意味と実行するという意味の二通りがありおます。あと、過去形「carried out」は実行して成功したという意味も含まれています。

– 「let’s carry it out」-> : 外に移動させちゃおうよ。
– 「we must carry out the plan successfully」-> : 計画を成功させなければ。
– 「she carried out the tasks efficiently」-> : 彼女はてきぱきと仕事をこなした。

4. subscriptions

「subscription」は契約と訳せます。動詞の「subscribe」は「subscribe for a newsletter」-> メルマガに登録すると使えます。「subscribe」は接頭辞の「sub」 + 動詞の「scribe」で出来ています。

皆さん、他に「sub」で始まる単語、知っていますか？「subject」や「submit」など、たくさんの派生語があります。「sub」が変化した「suggest」「support」「success」などもあります。

5. at the time（アット ザ タイム）

「at the time」-> 当時・その時はと訳せます。フレーズを紹介します。

-「Did you find her lovely at the time?」-> その時彼女のこと好きだと思ったの？
-「I didn’t know it at the time」-> その時はわからなかったよ

おまけ

接頭辞の「sub」について少し触れましたね。「sub」と「scribe」は元々ラテン語なんです。英単語はラテン語から派生したものがたくさんあります。「scribe」にいろいろな接頭辞を付けて、「describe」-> 説明, 「prescription」 -> 処方箋, 「transcript」-> 成績書などの単語が出来ました。
